They don't want to know if formula is better than breast milk. Keep off from such advises.
The debate whether you should breastfeed your baby or give the bottle is never ending. Even with all the knowledge and awareness on benefits of breastfeedingall around many people fail to realise its importance. Worse, breastfeeding mothers always have to face a lot of criticism not just from society but sometimes from their near and dear ones too. Here are few of those thoughtless and heart-wrenching things people say to breastfeeding mothers which they should not do.
1. Your breasts will sag
As if opting not to breastfeed will keep them intact eternally. Your body changes in many ways during pregnancy and sagging breastsis just a part of it. However, for a breastfeeding mother who has already decided to do it, despite the baby bluesand the postpartumstruggle, this is the last thing she would want to hear. It is better not to remind her of aesthetics at this moment and encourage her to settle with the breastfeeding challenges.
2. Your child might not get enough nutrients
Despite experts and doctors repeatedly assuring mothers and elders of the family that breast milk has all the required nutrients needed by the childmost believe that it isn’t enough. Breastfeeding complimented with formulais what most people recommend. However, even WHO recommends first six months of exclusive breastfeeding for children. And not to mention breastfeeding is too tiring and challenging. So instead of telling a mother that her milk is not enough it is better to cook a healthy and hearty meal for her if you are really concerned.
3. Your child is too old to be breastfed
This happens mostly with mothers who choose to breastfeed their toddlers. Well, all we can say is that if a mother chooses to breastfeed her toddler it is her choice and also depends on the comfort level of the child. How long they tend to continue is not any one’s business. In fact, breastfeeding even after six months of age along with weaninghas extended benefits and develops deeper emotional bonding.
4. You should supplement it with formula
This advice is something that every mother who plans to exclusively breastfeed detests. While it is true that breastfeeding is tiring and can at times make a new mother frustrated formula isn’t what she is opting for at the moment. Saying this makes her weaker in pursuing her breastfeeding goals.
5. Till when you plan to breastfeed?
How does it even matter to others? But some people love to make a mother feel uncomfortable with these questions.
6. You are spoiling your child!
Especially, if you feed on demand, this is something you have to listen often. But nobody knows how you are spoiling your child by picking up on hunger cues and just satiating the baby.
7. Your child will learn about breasts before his/her age
Oh really! Will he/she not learn about breasts if you don’t breastfeed? What is wrong with knowing a functional female organ which is nothing but pure food for the baby?
8. Doesn’t it hurt or pain?
One would not ask this question if he/she knows the true challenges of breastfeeding and how a mother copes with it. Even if it hurts or pains, there are chances the mother is not going to give up so stop questioning her.
9. Are you still breastfeeding?
The answer to this question should aptly be, ‘Hell, yes. You mind.’
