91-year-old Man in Hospice Knits Hats for the Homeless
Morrie Boogart, 91, may be in hospice care in his hometown of Grandville, Michigan, but that hasn’t stopped him from thinking of others.

Boogart is well aware that soon the summer weather will give way to a harsh Michigan winter, and he wants the homeless population to be well prepared for it. So in order to do his part, Boogart has been knitting hats for them–to the tune of 8,000 total. [1]

He has been knitting these caps for more than 15 years, hoping that the homeless population will be able to put them to good use and keep themselves warm during the unforgiving winter months.

As Boogart spends most of his days sitting in his bed as he is on medical bedrest, he cites learning to knit as one of the best things to ever happen to him. With his declining health, Boogart says that when he is not knitting, he is sleeping. The knitting, he says, gives him a purpose in life and helps him feel good while helping others. Adding on to all these positives, there are actually many health benefits of knitting!

He says of his knitting, “This has been the best thing that’s happened to me because I just stay in my room.”

Although he was a more nimble knitter in his younger days and says that he is much slower now, he still manages to produce at least one hat every two days. He is storing them in his room and plans to have them delivered to the homeless at some point in October, just in time for the chill weather to set in.

“I’m awfully slow,” he stated of his knitting progress, [2] but that doesn’t mean his efforts aren’t sorely needed or appreciated.

Currently, Boogart resides in hospice at Cambridge Manor in Grandville, Michigan. The assisted living and nursing home is gladly accepting donations of yarn for Boogart to continue his good deed.
