Chronic cold is a common ailment. When you have sneezing, watery discharge from the nose (runny nose), itchy or congested nose with watery, red eyes for more than an hour, it can be termed can be termed as persistent rhinitis. Dr Rahul Dogra, Operations Manager at the Kairali Ayurvedic Centre, Mumbai, tells us how Ayurveda can help treat persistent rhinitis or chronic cold.

In Ayurveda, rhinitis or cold is referred to as Vata-Kaphaja Pratishaya. Ama (toxins), Asatmya (any change in the environment around the individual) and virudh ahar (wrong combination foods) results in cold or allergic conditions. Ama is the product of impaired digestion and metabolism. Wrong food combinations(Virudh Ahar) having antagonist properties like fish with milk, fruit juice with milk, clarified butter with honey, ice cream after night meals, leads to allergy.

Ayurvedic treatment for persistent rhinitis/chronic cold

If the symptoms are severe and chronic, Vamana Panchakarma treatment, followed by Virechana is administered. This helps to relieve Ama and balance Tridosha. For those who don’t have digestionissues, Nasya treatment (nasal drops therapy) is administered with herbal oils such as Anu taila or Shadbindu taila.

After the Panchakarma treatment, Ayurvedic medicines are administered to improve respiratory immunity and strength of upper respiratory tract. Here are some natural remedies to boost your immune system.

Strict diet precautions for cold

Consume light food and lukewarm water. Consume Kaphahara foods like slightly spicy food, saindhav salt (rock salt), legumes and soups. Avoid oily food, fermented food, congestive food, food that is too hot or too cold, sour food. Do not consume sweets, banana, curd, ice creams, cakes, yellow grams, alcohol and cold beverages.
