Top 5 Companies Trying to Stop GMO Labeling in Colorado
Want to know the biggest impedance to GMO labeling in Colorado and perhaps the rest of the nation right now?
Want to know the biggest impedance to GMO labeling in Colorado and perhaps the rest of the nation right now? It boils down to 5 big spenders , though there are others in the game of trying to keep you in the dark about what’s in your food. Over $8 million has been raised so far, specifically aimed at stopping the GMO labeling Statutory Amendment 105. You can see the full text of that document here.
Coloradans and the rest of the country have the right to make informed choices about what is in their food. Aside from health concerns, some people have religious, moral, or cultural beliefs that prohibit them from eating genetically modified foods – the same way that some people want to eat meat and some don’t, while others prefer Kosher, etc.
Using very unsavory political maneuvers such as the TTP ( Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement), buying off Congress members and senators and finagling key appointments in both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as well as the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) isn’t enough for Monsanto and their ilk. Now, (for a while, actually) the mega-corp wants to take state’s rights away so that they can keep shoveling GMO crops onto our dinner tables.
Even President Obama seems to be in cahoots with the biotechindustry, despite promising GMO labeling back in 2007. Of Obama’s Federal initiatives, the 2010 African Hunger Plan and the 2012 Farm Bill present the most important examples of the administration’s friendly attitude towards Monsanto.
Following the GMO labeling bills in California, Washington, and other states, these corporations who control a huge portion of the food supply are now throwing money at a campaign to defeat labeling in Colorado. They realize that if voters successfully pass a GMO labeling bill there, it could happen just as easily in every other state – it takes the power away from corrupt federal agencies .
According to RighttoKnowColorado.org, these are the culprits we need to go after with everything we’ve got:
Monsanto Company: $4,700,452 PepsiCo: $1,150,000 Kraft Foods: $1,030,000 General Mills Inc.: $820,000 Dow AgroSciences LLC: $300,000Click for a larger image size.
Write, email, or call these food companies (like PepsiCo, Kraftand General Mills) and tell them you will no longer purchase their products, and then boycott them. Tell them exactly what you think of their contributions to limit GMO labeling, and then forget about Cherrios, Tropicana juices, Frito-Lay chips, Quaker Oat Meal, Kraft Mac N Cheese, and other ‘standards’ in the American diet made by these companies, and look for something that won’t hurt you over time when you eat it.
You can also let your legislators know you WON’T be voting them into office again. If you missed the article on who voted to support GMOs, you can see that list, here.
