According to South Delhi Municipal Corporation, which monitors the number of dengue and chikungunya cases here, 487 cases of dengue and 432 chikungunya cases were reported till August 27. While North Delhi recorded the highest number of dengue cases at 98, South Delhi recorded the highest number of chikungunya cases at 25. However, IANS reported that seven hospitals in Delhi have reported more than 1,000 chikungunya cases.

With heavy rainfall and flooding in New Delhi, doctors are also falling prey to these vector-borne diseases.Over 10 doctors from Safdarjung Hospital tested positive for chikungunya and another 25 junior doctors, including senior and junior resident doctors, are suffering from chikungunya and dengue as of now. Other than that, out of the 175 chikungunya patients in  Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, over 30 are doctors from the same hospital.

Waking up to the spurt in vector-borne diseases in the last few weeks itself, the Health Ministry had finally set up a control room to monitor the rising number of dengue and chikungunya cases in Delhi. Following that, the central government also directed all the states and Union Territories to declare dengue as a notifiable disease for improving reporting and for taking preventive measures in the affected areas.
