The Next Prop 37: New ‘Cleaner’ GMO Labeling Bill Introduced in California
A new, simpler version of Prop 37, the GMO labeling bill defeated recently in California due to the GMA’s abhorrent and illegal money infused politics, is being proposed in California.

The bill will address the concerns of many labeling advocates – that we are eating food labeled ‘natural’ that is nothing but toxic, chemical, transgenic, engineered non-food. Currently on food labels the biotech hand is not required to be mentioned, and real natural foods are hard to distinguish from fake ones.

Organic foods have to go through rigorous and expensive tests to be declared ‘organic,’ so why don’t genetically modified ones? We are guzzling down RoundUp-laden corn, soy, sugar beets, and other crops while organic farmers are struggling. The contents of our food should never be a big secret, unless of course the people who make it are up to something besides creating food. Furthermore, patenting seeds is about as ridiculous as trying to patent James Brown’s dance moves. They’ve been around for a long time. You can’t own them.

People have been relegated to eating toxic, herbicide-doused food since real foods are harder to come byand often cost more. But it shouldn’t be this way.

California State Senator, Norren Evans believes people have the right to real food, too, and at least some transparency about what they consume.  If the SB 1381passes, it would require genetically engineered food sold in California to be labeled as such. 17 environmental groups back the bill as well as Californians for GE Food Labeling.

Though the biotech industry and Grocery Manufacturer’s Association will likely fight the bill as they did Prop 37, it stands on the shoulders of the fight we’ve already waged.

Debbie Friedman, a co-chair of Moms Advocating Sustainability, one of the coalition groups says:

“Californians agree — we want the choice about the food we put on our dinner tables. We want a choice about the legacy we leave the Golden State’s children. Labeling genetically engineered foods gives us the opportunity to make informed decisions about our food, from farm to fork.”

If Monsanto wants to win this time, they will have to spend more than the $47 million in invested in defeating Prop 37, because as time goes on, more and more people are becoming aware of the dangers of GMO.

CEO of Lundberg Family Farms, a third-generation rice farmer says:

“This is an inevitable wave of change. The effort has come full circle to California. The new straightforward bill is an even simpler, clearer version of Proposition 37. It would simply require food sold in California grocery stores to be labeled if it contains genetically engineered ingredients.”

And Mark Squire, owner and manager of the grocery store Good Earth Natural Foods says:

“Labeling food is a clear and affordable way to give Californians choice. Food manufacturers regularly update their labels, including nutrition information, and this is one more simple update they can make.”

That’s one way to cut through the biotech BS. Let’s work to help California pass this precedent-setting bill.
